Wood Spindles / Balusters
Wood porch balusters are an essential part of your Traditional Porch. The 3 1/2″ and 2 1/2″ Porch Spindles are the most popular for porches all over the country. The 1 5/8″ size is larger and of much higher quality than what’s typically found in home centers or lumber yards. Polyurethane Porch Spindles also available.

Wood Porch Balusters are the centerpiece of your porch balustrade.
Turned Spindles and Square Balusters are great for new construction as well as porch renovations and restorations. Wood railing spindles are ideal for those looking for the real authentic look and feel of natural wood for their home’s exterior railing.
Available in Cedar or Mahogany, factory primed or unfinished. Most of our customers choose Cedar spindles / balusters because of this wood’s beauty, rot resistance, and cost-effectiveness. Mahogany hardwood spindles / balusters are identical is size and design, but machines to a smoother finish and will hold up to abuse or accidents better. Both Cedar and Mahogany have the same rot-resistance rating of “very durable”.
Which porch spindle design should I choose?
The designs of our turned wood balusters were developed by American Porch through years of study and experience. They have been reviewed by other architectural millwork specialists and have been determined to be authentic and architecturally correct. Our spindle designs are proudly worn by registered historic homes throughout the country. All of our standard designs fall under the traditional design umbrella, so there isn’t a wrong answer. Take the time to look through the installed pictures in the product listing. It’s likely that one will stand out for you. It may also be helpful to take a drive with your significant other throughout the surrounding area. Are there any porches that strike you? You can even send us a picture that inspires you, and we can make recommendations on which design and setup will work best.
Our factory-primed option now includes custom-engineered wood preservatives designed to protect against fungi and insects. Unlike traditional primers that merely lay down a protective moisture-resistant barrier, we now use a proprietary blend of non-metallic and non-hazardous preservatives that provides a very effective long-term mold, decay, and insect protection. These preservatives penetrate into the wood before the primer dries and are sealed in. This is an additional way to ensure the longest possible life from your beautiful wood balustrades.
